Harry Kane moved into another chapter of England history as Thomas Tuchel’s side battled past Panama to finish first in Group L and secure their place in the last 32 of the World Cup.
England were far from convincing for much of the match, but second half goals from Jude Bellingham and Kane gave them a 2 to 0 victory. The result means England will now meet DR Congo in Atlanta in the knockout stage.
After a slow and frustrating opening hour, England finally found the breakthrough in the 62nd minute. Bukayo Saka’s corner caused problems inside the Panama box, and Bellingham reacted smartly to guide the ball beyond goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. It was a much needed moment of quality from a player who looked determined to lift England out of a flat performance.
Just five minutes later, Bellingham was involved again. This time, he delivered an excellent cross into the area, where Kane was waiting to head home from close range. The goal was a landmark one for the England captain, taking his World Cup tally to 11 and moving him ahead of Gary Lineker as England’s all time top scorer in the tournament.
It was also Kane’s 82nd goal for his country in 117 appearances, further strengthening his status as one of England’s greatest ever forwards.
Bellingham was England’s standout performer throughout the game. His energy, movement and drive gave the team a spark when they needed it most. Alongside Morgan Rogers, he pushed higher up the pitch, although that approach did leave Elliot Anderson exposed at times in midfield.
While England achieved their main objective, the performance still raised questions. Panama, who are ranked 42nd in the world and had already been eliminated, created too many chances for Tuchel’s liking. Their 13 shots highlighted England’s defensive uncertainty, something stronger opponents may punish more severely.
There was also another concern at right back. Jarell Quansah, already filling in for the injured Reece James, had to leave the field in the second half. With James dealing with another hamstring issue, Tuchel will be hoping Quansah’s problem is not serious.
Jordan Henderson also made history late in the game, becoming the first player to represent England at four World Cups.
England are through as group winners, but improvement will be needed if they are to go deep in the tournament.
