LASK produced an impressive performance to defeat Sporting Lisbon 3-2 in a thrilling Champions League encounter, securing their maiden victory of the campaign while bringing the Portuguese club’s unbeaten European run to an end.
Sporting entered the contest with maximum points from their opening two fixtures and quickly established an advantage. Just five minutes into the match, Luis Suarez converted from the penalty spot after referee Nick Walsh penalised a challenge on Nestory Irankunda.
However, the Austrian outfit responded confidently and restored parity in the 15th minute. Christoph Lang received possession outside the penalty area before directing a powerful strike beyond the goalkeeper into the opposite corner.
Both teams continued to compete fiercely throughout the remaining opening period, although neither managed to establish control before the interval.
Following the restart, LASK demonstrated greater attacking efficiency and capitalised on opportunities created through swift transitions.
Sasa Kalajdzic completed the turnaround in the 63rd minute, finishing accurately after receiving the ball on the right during a rapid attacking move.
The visitors subsequently strengthened their position when Krystof Danek found the net from close range, beating the goalkeeper at the near post to establish a two goal cushion.
Sporting refused to surrender, with Suarez registering his second goal of the evening to create a tense conclusion. Nevertheless, LASK defended their narrow advantage successfully to celebrate their first away triumph in Champions League history.
The result also ended the Austrian side’s disappointing sequence of eight consecutive away defeats in major European tournaments.
Sporting will attempt to recover against Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge on 3 November, while LASK welcome Slovan Bratislava on the same date, hoping to build further momentum in Europe.
