Mbappé Double Powers France Past Iraq in Weather Hit World Cup Clash

Kylian Mbappé continued his remarkable World Cup scoring run with a brace as France delivered a controlled and confident performance to defeat Iraq in Philadelphia, despite a long interruption caused by severe weather.

The French forward now has 16 goals in 16 World Cup appearances, placing him joint second on the all time scoring list, just two behind Lionel Messi, who recently moved ahead of Miroslav Klose after breaking the long standing record earlier in the tournament.

The match began under steady pressure from France, who took control early and opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Mbappé finished clinically from the edge of the area, sending a precise left foot strike into the far corner. France continued to dictate tempo, although Iraq gradually found moments of possession after a hydration break, even while coping with the setback of losing captain Aymen Hussein to injury.

A major turning point arrived due to weather disruption. Lightning activity forced a suspension that lasted more than two hours, splitting the contest into an unusual rhythm and halting momentum on both sides.

When play resumed, France quickly reasserted authority. A costly mistake in the Iraqi back line allowed Ousmane Dembélé to set up Mbappé for his second goal, as goalkeeper Ahmed Basil failed to control a short restart from defender Zaid Tahseen. Mbappé finished calmly to extend the lead.

France continued to threaten. Adrien Rabiot missed a clear opportunity with a header, while Michael Olise struck the crossbar with a clever chipped attempt. The pressure eventually led to a third goal, with Dembélé finishing low into the corner after a brilliant outside foot pass from Olise.

That strike marked Dembélé’s first goal in a major international tournament in his 20th appearance, a significant personal milestone. Olise also stood out, contributing two assists and further strengthening his growing influence in the squad.

Mbappé nearly completed a hat trick late on after breaking through the defence, but his effort went over the bar.

Iraq did show moments of attacking intent, creating two decent chances in the closing stages, yet they were unable to seriously challenge the French defence. Rebin Sulaka volleyed over from a set piece, while Ali Al Hamadi failed to connect with a dangerous cross.

France now lead Group I with six points, while Iraq remain without a point after two matches. Didier Deschamps’ side once again demonstrated their depth, discipline, and ability to perform regardless of conditions, reinforcing their status as one of the tournament favourites.
