Beth Mooney produced a composed unbeaten half century as Australia powered into their eighth T20 World Cup final with a commanding win over West Indies in the first semi final at The Oval.
Set a target of 126, Australia completed the chase in style with seven overs remaining. Mooney led the reply with 61 not out from just 36 deliveries, striking eight boundaries and showing the control that has made her one of the most reliable batters in the format. Her innings also brought up an eighth T20 World Cup fifty, drawing her level with Suzie Bates for the most half centuries in tournament history.
Australia’s chase did suffer a concern when Ellyse Perry retired hurt after scoring two runs from seven balls due to a quadricep issue. However, Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner removed any pressure with an unbeaten 63 run partnership from 37 balls. Gardner, continuing her strong tournament form, finished on 35 not out from 20 balls and sealed victory with a boundary.
Earlier, Australia’s spinners had done the major damage. Gardner was outstanding with the ball, taking 2 for 13 from four overs, including a double wicket maiden. Georgia Wareham and Sophie Molineux also claimed two wickets each as West Indies lost control after a steady start.
Hayley Matthews looked dangerous but fell to Wareham after making 27, triggering a collapse of four wickets for 12 runs in 17 balls. West Indies also faced unexpected drama before play when Deandra Dottin had to leave the field due to a medical issue shortly after the anthems. She later returned to bat at No. 8 and gave her side a late lift with 26 from 16 balls.
Despite Dottin’s brave effort, West Indies could not recover. Australia’s depth, discipline and experience proved too strong as they continued their unbeaten run and moved one step closer to another world title.
