Sri Lanka produced one of their finest T20 performances in recent years, overcoming New Zealand by five wickets in a tense contest at Southampton. Chasing 151 for victory, the Sri Lankans held their composure under pressure and reached the target with two deliveries remaining, thanks largely to outstanding contributions from Nilakshika Silva and Kaushini Nuthyangana.
Nilakshika Leads the Recovery
Sri Lanka’s pursuit was in trouble when they slipped to 55 for 4, leaving a challenging task ahead. With the asking rate steadily rising, Nilakshika stepped up with a mature and calculated unbeaten knock of 54 from 37 balls.
She initially focused on rotating the strike before gradually finding the boundary when the situation demanded. Her partnership with Kavisha Dilhari proved crucial in rebuilding the innings and keeping Sri Lanka within reach of the target.
Dilhari’s dismissal left Sri Lanka needing 45 runs from the final five overs, but Nilakshika remained calm and continued to find valuable runs at key moments. Two boundaries off Melie Kerr during the 18th over shifted momentum firmly in Sri Lanka’s favour and brought the equation within reach.
Nuthyangana Delivers Under Pressure
Kaushini Nuthyangana played a decisive role both behind the stumps and with the bat. Earlier in the match, she impressed with three catches, including an excellent low grab that removed Isabella Gaze and helped Sri Lanka maintain pressure on the New Zealand batting unit.
Her contribution with the bat proved equally valuable. Coming in during a tense phase of the chase, she scored an unbeaten 24 from just 14 deliveries. Together with Nilakshika, she added 48 runs from only 28 balls for the sixth wicket.
Nuthyangana mixed boundaries with smart running between the wickets and ensured Sri Lanka stayed ahead of the required rate. Fittingly, she struck the winning runs through square leg to spark celebrations in the Sri Lankan camp.
Spinners Restrict New Zealand
Earlier, Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept New Zealand under control despite solid efforts from Sophie Devine and Melie Kerr, who both scored 45. The spin attack consistently applied pressure, preventing the White Ferns from accelerating during the middle stages.
A partnership between Kerr and Georgia Plimmer provided some stability, while Devine carried the innings later on. However, New Zealand could only manage 150 for 6, a total that ultimately proved insufficient.
Semi Final Race Heats Up
The result gives Sri Lanka their first points of the tournament after losing their opening fixture against England. A victory over West Indies in their next match would significantly strengthen their chances of reaching the semi finals.
For New Zealand, the defeat leaves them under pressure after consecutive losses. Their remaining matches against England, Scotland and Ireland have now become crucial if they are to keep their campaign alive.
