Malaysia will return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2026 after Sepang International Circuit was selected to stage the postponed Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2 to 4.
The race will sit between the Azerbaijan and Singapore rounds, while every other event on the 2026 schedule will retain its original date. Formula 1 and the FIA announced the arrangement following discussions with the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia.
Under the proposal, the race will officially be titled the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. However, the plan still requires the completion of final agreements and formal approval from the World Motor Sport Council before it is fully confirmed.
Moving the event to Sepang ensures that the Bahrain round remains part of the championship rather than being cancelled. The decision also brings Formula 1 back to one of Asia’s most recognised racing venues.
Sepang first joined the championship in 1999 and quickly became popular among drivers and supporters. Its mixture of long straights, demanding corners and heavy braking zones regularly produces close contests and strategic challenges.
The tropical climate is another major feature of racing in Malaysia. Sudden rain and high temperatures can dramatically alter track conditions, placing extra pressure on teams, tyres and drivers.
The return of Formula 1 to Sepang is expected to attract strong regional interest, with Malaysian fans receiving another opportunity to watch the world’s leading drivers compete at a circuit remembered for dramatic races and unpredictable conditions during an important stage of season.
