South Africa secured a tense victory over Pakistan in a match that looked destined to be one sided before turning into a gripping contest. Although the Proteas eventually reached their target with two wickets remaining and three overs to spare, Pakistan’s spirited fightback ensured the result was far from straightforward.
The match began disastrously for Pakistan. Marizanne Kapp produced a superb opening spell that immediately put South Africa in control. She dismissed Muneeba Ali with the first delivery of the innings before removing Gull Feroza later in the same over with a delivery that clipped the top of the stumps. Ayesha Zafar soon followed, while Ayabonga Khaka added further pressure as wickets continued to tumble.
Pakistan’s troubles were compounded by poor running between the wickets. Four batters were run out during the innings, with several dismissals coming at crucial moments when partnerships were beginning to form. By the time the dust settled, Pakistan had slumped to 55 for 8 and appeared headed for a very low total.
However, captain Fatima Sana refused to surrender. Producing one of the finest innings of the tournament, she launched a remarkable counterattack that transformed the innings. Her unbeaten 55 from 38 deliveries lifted Pakistan from a hopeless position to a respectable total of 126. The all rounder accelerated brilliantly in the closing stages, collecting 42 runs from the final 19 balls she faced and striking 19 runs in the last over of the innings.
Pakistan carried that momentum into the field and made a promising start with the ball. South Africa managed only 20 runs in the opening four overs, while Sana claimed the wicket of Sune Luus to raise hopes of an upset.
Those hopes were challenged by Annerie Dercksen, who produced a match defining knock. The powerful batter dominated the middle overs and particularly punished Rameen Shamim, smashing 21 runs in a single over. Her aggressive stroke play relieved pressure on the South African chase and shifted momentum firmly in her team’s favour.
Even after Dercksen’s departure, Pakistan continued to chip away with regular wickets, keeping the contest alive until the closing moments. Yet missed chances and sloppy fielding proved costly. With the scores level and South Africa eight wickets down, Pakistan still had an opportunity to force more drama. Instead, a wayward delivery down the leg side resulted in the winning run, handing South Africa a nervous but valuable victory.
While South Africa celebrated the points, Sana’s outstanding all round effort stood out as the defining performance of the match.
