Taylor and West Indies Spinners Overcome Scotland’s Strong Challenge

Stafanie Taylor marked her return to the Women’s T20 World Cup in style, producing a match changing innings that helped West Indies secure a hard fought victory over Scotland in a contest that remained alive until the closing overs.

Having missed the opening stages of the tournament, Taylor arrived at the crease with West Indies struggling at 85 for 5 in the 15th over. The experienced batter immediately shifted the momentum, smashing an unbeaten 47 from only 19 balls at a strike rate of 247.36. Her explosive finish lifted West Indies to a competitive total after Scotland’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding had kept them under pressure for most of the innings.

Scotland’s bowlers were impressive from the start. Rachel Slater and Gabriella Fontenla maintained tight lines, while Katherine Fraser produced an outstanding all round display. Fraser claimed two wickets, executed a brilliant run out and also completed a stunning boundary catch to dismiss Qiana Joseph.

West Indies found scoring difficult throughout the middle overs. Hayley Matthews managed only 14 runs before Fraser bowled her, while Deandra Dottin and Shemaine Campbelle also fell at important moments. However, Taylor’s powerful hitting in the final overs transformed the innings. She struck several boundaries and three towering sixes as West Indies collected 69 runs from the final six overs.

Scotland responded confidently in the chase. Opener Darcey Carter led the charge, striking regular boundaries and building valuable partnerships with Fraser and Ailsa Lister. Despite appearing to struggle with a leg injury, Carter continued to battle and brought up her ninth T20I half century from 53 deliveries.

At one stage Scotland were well placed at 51 without loss after five overs. However, Matthews turned the match with a crucial spell. Her figures of 3 for 19 from four overs included 13 dot balls and key dismissals that triggered a collapse. Fraser, Kathryn Bryce and Megan McColl all departed during a damaging period that shifted the pressure back onto Scotland.

Even then, Scotland refused to surrender. Carter and Lister kept their side in contention, while West Indies looked increasingly nervous in the field. With 22 runs required from the final two overs, the match remained wide open.

Aaliyah Alleyne then produced the decisive breakthrough. She removed Carter before striking twice more in the 19th over to derail Scotland’s pursuit. Although West Indies continued to make mistakes in the field, they eventually closed out the match, with Joseph taking two late wickets to seal a dramatic win.

The result gives West Indies their second victory of the tournament, while Scotland can take plenty of encouragement from another spirited performance on the world stage.
