Sweden made an impressive start to their World Cup journey with a commanding 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey, delivering one of the most convincing performances of the opening round.
The Scandinavian side wasted little time asserting control. Midfielder Yasin Ayari opened the scoring after just seven minutes, punishing a defensive mistake with a stunning strike into the top corner. The Brighton player, whose father was born in Tunisia, chose not to celebrate after becoming Sweden’s youngest World Cup scorer since Tomas Brolin in 1990.
Sweden doubled their lead in the 30th minute through Alexander Isak, who marked his World Cup debut in memorable fashion. The Liverpool forward combined brilliantly with Viktor Gyokeres before powering forward and drilling a precise finish into the bottom corner. It was a goal that showcased the pace, strength and composure that have made him one of Europe’s most dangerous attackers.
Tunisia found a lifeline shortly before the break when Omar Rekik headed in from a Hannibal Mejbri free kick, reducing the deficit and briefly raising hopes of a comeback.
Those hopes quickly faded in the second half as Sweden regained complete control. Isak turned creator on the hour mark, setting up Gyokeres to restore the two goal cushion. The forward was involved again later in the match when substitute Mattias Svanberg found the net just 18 seconds after entering the field. The strike became the second fastest goal scored by a substitute in World Cup history since records began in 1966.
Ayari completed the scoring in style with another powerful effort from distance, securing his second goal of the match and Sweden’s fifth overall.
The convincing result sends Sweden to the top of Group F and provides an early statement of intent as they pursue a place in the knockout stages.
