Punjab Kings continued their flawless start to the IPL 2026 season with a commanding win over Mumbai Indians, chasing down 196 with ease and plenty of deliveries remaining. While Quinton de Kock marked his return with a superb century, it ultimately proved insufficient against a well-rounded Punjab performance led by Arshdeep Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, and Shreyas Iyer.
Mumbai were forced into a change after Rohit Sharma’s injury, bringing de Kock into the lineup. The South African made an immediate impact, striking 112 from 60 balls and becoming only the third batter in IPL history to score hundreds for three different franchises. Alongside him, Naman Dhir impressed with a brisk 50 off 31 deliveries, helping Mumbai reach a strong position at 125 for 2 after 12 overs. However, the innings lost momentum during the closing stages, with Punjab’s bowlers tightening their grip. Only 70 runs came in the final eight overs, leaving Mumbai with 195 for 6, a total that looked competitive but not match-winning.
Arshdeep Singh played a crucial role with the ball. The left-arm pacer found early movement and maintained control across different phases of the innings. He dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession and crossed the milestone of 100 IPL wickets during his spell. Support from Marco Jansen and others ensured Mumbai never fully capitalised on their strong start.
Punjab’s chase began with minor setbacks as Allah Ghazanfar struck twice during the powerplay, briefly giving Mumbai hope. However, Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer quickly shifted the momentum. Prabhsimran, who got an early life, made the most of it by producing an unbeaten 80 from just 39 balls. His innings included powerful hitting once the field spread, allowing him to dominate the scoring phase.
At the other end, Iyer anchored the pursuit with a composed 66 off 35 deliveries, registering his third consecutive half century. His ability to rotate strike and find boundaries ensured there was no pressure during the chase. The pair’s partnership effectively ended Mumbai’s chances, as they calmly dismantled both pace and spin.
Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s disciplined bowling throughout the season, he remained without a wicket again, finishing with figures of 0 for 41. Punjab eventually reached the target with 21 balls remaining, underlining their dominance.
With five wins in five matches, Punjab Kings look like one of the strongest contenders this season, while Mumbai Indians must quickly regroup after another disappointing outing.
