In an exciting high-scoring encounter at New Chandigarh, Rajasthan Royals (RR) handed Punjab Kings (PBKS) their first defeat of IPL 2026. Set a challenging target of 229, RR cruised to victory with four balls to spare, thanks to a brilliant partnership between Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey. The two added 77 runs off just 32 balls for the fifth wicket, making what initially looked like a tough chase into a comfortable one.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued their impressive form, but it was Ferreira and Dubey who turned the game around. While PBKS’s Marcus Stoinis blasted an unbeaten 62 off 22 balls, it was not enough to stop RR. Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 36 runs, as RR moved up to third place in the points table.
Arya’s Fearless Start, Archer’s Pace
Priyansh Arya came into the game with an explosive powerplay strike rate of 260.27, and he lived up to the hype. He began his innings with a series of remarkable strokes, including a stunning six over covers off Nandre Burger. At the other end, Jofra Archer found his rhythm, nearly scolding his captain for not placing a slip before getting his first wicket. PBKS raced to 65 in the first six overs, but their momentum slowed as RR’s spinners took control.
Middle-Overs Struggle for PBKS
Cooper Connolly got off to a quick start, scoring 30 off 14 balls, but he was dismissed by Yash Raj Punja’s clever googly. Prabhsimran Singh, who scored a quick half-century, was also dismissed, leaving PBKS at 95/4 after 16 overs. RR’s spin duo of Punja and Ravindra Jadeja dominated the middle overs, making it hard for PBKS to maintain their run rate.
Stoinis Powers PBKS to 228
Stoinis, after facing only 26 balls in the tournament so far, showed his prowess when he hammered Archer for two sixes. But his most destructive hitting came against Brijesh Sharma, as he belted 24 runs off the final over to help PBKS finish with 228 runs.
RR’s Fast Start, Ferreira’s Finish
RR made a blistering start, with Sooryavanshi smashing 43 off just 16 balls. After he was dismissed, Jaiswal took charge, bringing up his fifty off 26 balls. But it was Ferreira and Dubey who finished the job, as they chased down the target with ease, showcasing their finishing prowess. RR’s fast bowlers exploited PBKS’s weaknesses, taking 166 runs off just 68 balls.
With a perfect display of both batting and bowling, RR’s victory was sealed, marking a crucial win in their bid for the playoffs.
