For the first time in years, the crowd at Chepauk stayed glued to their seats while Chennai Super Kings pulled off a memorable chase against Lucknow Super Giants. Chennai successfully hunted down a 200 plus target for the first time since 2018 and climbed to fifth place in the standings with a third consecutive victory.
Urvil Patel Produces Historic Power Hitting Display
The evening belonged to young sensation Urvil Patel, whose fearless stroke play completely shifted the momentum of the contest. Walking in with CSK under pressure, the youngster smashed a breathtaking 65 from only 23 deliveries and matched the fastest half century in IPL history by reaching the landmark in just 13 balls. His innings transformed the chase within minutes and left the Chepauk crowd in disbelief.
Earlier, LSG produced a blistering start thanks to Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh. Inglis was especially destructive during the powerplay, attacking both spin and pace with incredible confidence. His creative ramps and fearless hitting helped him race to 77 from just 25 balls, placing him among the highest powerplay scorers in IPL history. Only Suresh Raina, Travis Head and Jake Fraser-McGurk have scored more inside the first six overs.
Noor Ahmad and Jamie Overton Change the Momentum
However, Chennai fought back brilliantly through Noor Ahmad and Jamie Overton. Noor once again troubled Nicholas Pooran, continuing a dominant matchup that has heavily favoured the Afghan spinner this season. Overton then slowed the scoring rate with disciplined pace bowling, removing Inglis at a crucial moment and delivering ten dot balls during his opening spell. LSG lost momentum rapidly after the powerplay and slipped to 56 for 5 in the next 50 deliveries before Shahbaz Ahmed’s late six pushed them beyond 200.
The chase exploded into life once Urvil arrived. He launched bowlers repeatedly over midwicket and hammered five consecutive boundaries, including a brutal sequence of towering sixes. At one stage, he looked capable of breaking the IPL record for the quickest fifty outright before eventually sharing the achievement with Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Shivam Dube Finishes the Chase in Style
Even after Urvil’s dismissal, the game remained tense. LSG tightened the screws and reduced Chennai’s scoring pace, leaving Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer with work still to do in the closing overs. Dropped catches proved costly for Lucknow, and Veer capitalised with a valuable six before Dube finished the contest in style. Facing Aiden Markram in the final over, the left hander smashed back to back sixes to seal a dramatic victory and complete a remarkable night in Chennai.
