Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have built their legacy on experience and composure, especially in tough situations. In the past, even a shaky score like 50 for 5 didn’t mean the game was lost. One of the best examples came in 2018, when Faf du Plessis played a match-winning knock that turned a near defeat into a place in the final. That innings showed why CSK always trusted experienced players they knew how to handle pressure.
But things looked very different in their recent match in Guwahati.
CSK were reduced to 51 for 5 on a pitch that wasn’t easy to bat on. The ball was moving around and not coming nicely onto the bat. This new-look CSK side, filled with young and aggressive players, struggled to adapt. Instead of building the innings, they continued playing risky shots and eventually got bowled out for just 127.
In contrast, Rajasthan Royals (RR) looked confident and fearless. Young star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stole the show with a stunning 15 ball fifty. His fearless stroke play changed the mood of the game and even impressed the crowd, which was mostly filled with CSK supporters. By the time he got going, the stadium was alive with energy.
CSK’s approach raised a big question why didn’t they slow things down and adjust to the conditions?
Batting coach Mike Hussey defended the team’s mindset. He said players should not overthink or doubt their natural game. According to him, success in cricket often comes from backing your instincts. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also admitted that the team could have played more patiently and aimed for a score around 150 to 160, but added that in modern T20 cricket, teams often prefer to keep attacking.
There were a few positives, though. Kartik Sharma showed promise with his ability to rotate strike and hit boundaries when needed. His balanced approach stood out in an otherwise struggling innings.
This CSK team is clearly in a transition phase. The experienced “mongrel” mindset that defined them is slowly being replaced by young, fearless talent. While this brings energy and excitement, it also comes with challenges.
As Rajasthan Royals showed, growth takes time. For CSK, this match was a reminder that talent alone isn’t enough you also need patience, awareness, and the ability to adapt.
