Dembele Stars in PSG’s 5-4 Victory Over Bayern in Semi-Final Opener

In one of the most exhilarating Champions League semi-final matches in recent memory, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) triumphed 5-4 over Bayern Munich in a thrilling first-leg encounter at the Parc des Princes.

The match, a goal-laden spectacle, saw both sides delivering offensive fireworks, making it the highest-scoring European semi-final since the 1960 clash between Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt, which ended 6-3. Remarkably, Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer failed to make a single save, which further added to the drama of the evening.

PSG, already the defending Champions League holders, came from behind on multiple occasions, with the first half producing five goals. Bayern’s Harry Kane opened the scoring with a 17th-minute penalty, giving him his 59th goal of the season. PSG responded swiftly, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s stunning strike bringing them level before Joao Neves’ header put them ahead in the 33rd minute.

A dramatic end to the first half saw Ousmane Dembele convert a controversial penalty after a VAR review for a handball by Bayern’s Alphonso Davies. Despite the handball incident being debatable, the penalty stood, and Dembele netted in stoppage time to give PSG a 3-2 lead at halftime.

The second half didn’t slow down, with Kvaratskhelia and Dembele each scoring in quick succession in the 58th minute to give PSG a commanding 5-2 advantage. But Bayern refused to back down. Dayot Upamecano’s header and Luis Diaz’s superbly taken goal—after a VAR review overturned an offside decision—brought Bayern back into the contest at 5-4 by the 68th minute.

The encounter was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both sides adopting an attacking mentality, which left PSG’s Dembele predicting another high-scoring affair in the second leg. “We’re going to attack, and they’re going to attack too,” said Dembele after the match, confidently looking ahead to the Allianz Arena clash next week.

Despite a thrilling game, Harry Kane, while praising his defenders, noted that it was the attackers who ultimately dominated the match. His comments, however, were met with a contrasting opinion from Wayne Rooney, who criticized the defensive lapses on both sides. “The defending from both teams was really bad,” Rooney stated, pointing out that with so much attacking talent, the focus on defense was perhaps overlooked.

As the two sides prepare for the return leg, all eyes will be on Bayern’s ability to respond to this dramatic defeat and PSG’s hopes of securing a Champions League final spot. The Allianz Arena awaits an epic clash.
