Liverpool’s season has taken a significant hit following confirmation that Hugo Ekitike has suffered a major Achilles tendon rupture, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign and this summer’s international tournament with France.
The 23-year-old forward was forced off during the opening half of the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield after slipping awkwardly. Medical assessments later confirmed the severity of the damage, with early projections suggesting a recovery period ranging between six to nine months.
This setback comes at a crucial stage for Liverpool, who are battling for a top four finish. Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League standings, they trail Aston Villa by three points while holding a narrow advantage over Chelsea. Losing a key attacking option at this point could prove costly.
Ekitike had been one of the bright sparks this season, contributing 19 goals across club and international appearances since his high profile move from Eintracht Frankfurt. His absence also disrupts Liverpool’s much anticipated attacking trio alongside Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, a combination that has rarely been seen due to ongoing fitness issues.
Isak only recently returned to action after recovering from a fractured ankle sustained in December, further highlighting the team’s struggles to maintain a fully fit squad. Manager Arne Slot admitted the frustration, noting that the trio have barely shared time on the pitch this season.
France head coach Didier Deschamps also expressed his disappointment, praising Ekitike’s rapid integration into the national setup while backing him to return stronger.
Injuries have been a recurring issue for Liverpool throughout the campaign, with several key players sidelined at different stages. Just as the squad appeared to be regaining full fitness, this latest blow underlines the challenges they continue to face.
With decisive fixtures ahead, Liverpool must now adapt quickly without one of their most productive attackers.
