After a decade filled with trophies, unforgettable moments, and complete dominance in English football, Pep Guardiola has officially confirmed that his journey with Manchester City is coming to an end. The Spanish coach revealed that Sunday’s clash against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium will be his final match in charge of the club.
Guardiola leaves behind one of the most successful managerial eras in modern football. Since arriving in Manchester in 2016, he has guided City to 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a historic UEFA Champions League triumph. Under his leadership, the club became one of the strongest football forces in Europe while producing a style of football admired around the world.
Speaking during his final pre match media conference, Guardiola admitted that the moment felt right for both himself and the club to move in a different direction. The 55 year old explained that maintaining the same level of intensity and motivation after ten demanding years had become increasingly difficult.
He stated that the squad and the organisation would benefit from a fresh voice and a different approach moving forward. Guardiola also acknowledged that continuing to compete for major honours every few days requires enormous mental energy, something he no longer feels capable of giving at the highest standard.
The announcement came shortly after City lost the Premier League crown to Arsenal. A 1 1 draw against AFC Bournemouth confirmed Arsenal as champions, ending City’s reign at the top of English football.
Despite missing out on the league title, Guardiola still managed to secure both the FA Cup and League Cup during his final campaign, adding more silverware to his incredible legacy.
Manchester City are already preparing a grand farewell for the legendary manager. The club’s newly expanded North Stand will carry Guardiola’s name, while a statue honouring his achievements will also be built outside the stadium.
Former City assistant and current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly the leading candidate to take over.
Although Guardiola plans to step away from coaching for now, he confirmed that he will remain connected to the City Football Group in a global ambassador and advisory position, ensuring his influence on the club family continues long after his final whistle.
