Spain Make World Cup History With No Real Madrid Players in Squad

Spain have officially unveiled their 26 player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and one major detail has caught the attention of football fans around the globe. For the first time in the nation’s World Cup history, not a single Real Madrid player has been selected for the tournament squad.

The surprising decision marks a significant shift for the Spanish national side, especially considering Real Madrid’s long standing influence on the team over several decades. Spain have competed at the World Cup for 92 years, yet this is the first occasion where the famous Madrid club has no representation in the final selection.

One notable omission is defender Dean Huijsen. The centre back recently completed a £50 million transfer from Bournemouth and featured in 40 matches this season. Despite his consistent appearances, he was left out following a disappointing campaign for his club, which ended without a major trophy for the second year in a row.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has instead placed his trust in a squad built around Premier League stars and Barcelona talent. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya earned a place alongside midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino. Chelsea full back Marc Cucurella, Tottenham defender Pedro Porro, Manchester City midfielder Rodri and Crystal Palace attacker Yeremy Pino have also been called up.

Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal has been included despite concerns surrounding his hamstring injury. Reports suggest the teenage winger may miss Spain’s opening two fixtures, but the coaching staff still considered him important enough to travel with the team.

The squad also features experienced names such as Unai Simon, Fabian Ruiz, Dani Olmo and Nico Williams as Spain prepare for another attempt at global success in North America next summer.
