Villa Back on Track as McGinn and Watkins Sink West Ham

Aston Villa reignited their push for Champions League football with a 2-0 victory over West Ham at Villa Park, ending a run of three consecutive league defeats in emphatic fashion.

Unai Emery’s side produced one of their most complete performances of the season, particularly in a dominant first half that set the tone for the result. With their top-four rivals slipping up over the weekend, Villa capitalised fully, extending their advantage to five points over fifth-placed Liverpool and strengthening their grip on a coveted Champions League spot.

The breakthrough came courtesy of captain John McGinn, who marked his return from injury with a superb strike from distance. After a composed build-up, the ball was laid into his path just outside the box, and McGinn coolly passed his effort into the corner, giving Villa a deserved lead.

West Ham, who were forced into a late reshuffle following Jean-Clair Todibo’s withdrawal, struggled to cope with Villa’s intensity. Despite a resilient showing from Konstantinos Mavropanos, who made multiple goal-line clearances, the visitors were second-best throughout much of the opening period.

Villa had a chance to double their advantage before the break when Ollie Watkins went down in the box under a challenge from Mavropanos, but the penalty decision was controversially overturned, keeping West Ham within touching distance.

The visitors showed signs of improvement after the interval, with substitutions adding some urgency to their play. However, their inability to convert half-chances proved costly. Villa eventually sealed the win in the second half through Watkins, who reacted the quickest after Morgan Rogers’ shot was parried by the goalkeeper, tapping home from close range.

The goal was a timely boost for Watkins, who has recently been left out of England’s squad and is eager to rediscover his best form. His performance, full of energy and intent, earned him the player of the match award.

For Villa, the victory not only halts their losing streak but also reaffirms their credentials as genuine top-four contenders. Emery praised his team’s structure, control, and discipline, highlighting what he described as their best home performance of the season.

In contrast, West Ham’s struggles continue as they remain entrenched in the relegation battle. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo admitted his side fell short, particularly in the first half where they failed to compete physically or tactically.

With momentum now back on their side, Aston Villa look well-positioned to finish the season strongly, while West Ham face an increasingly urgent fight for survival.
