Dambulla Sixers opened their Lanka Premier League 2026 journey in impressive fashion, recording an 18 run victory against Kandy Royals in the tournament’s second fixture at the SSC Grounds in Colombo on 18 July.
After winning the toss and choosing to set a target, Dambulla produced a strong batting display to reach 205 for 6 from their 20 overs. Reeza Hendricks led the charge with a composed and powerful unbeaten 87 from 50 balls.
The South African struck 11 boundaries and cleared the ropes twice, holding the innings together as wickets fell around him. His ability to rotate the strike and punish loose deliveries allowed Dambulla to maintain momentum throughout their batting effort.
Gulbadin Naib then delivered a decisive late contribution when the Sixers needed acceleration. The Afghanistan all rounder smashed an unbeaten 46 from only 23 balls, with two fours and four sixes.
Hendricks and Naib added an unbeaten 94 runs from 43 deliveries for the seventh wicket. Their partnership transformed Dambulla’s position and carried the total beyond 200.
Dushan Hemantha and Nuwan Thushara were the most successful bowlers for Kandy, collecting two wickets each.
In reply, Kandy Royals remained competitive through several valuable innings. Dale Phillips top scored with 52, while Lahiru Udara contributed 44. Vijay Shankar also kept their hopes alive with an unbeaten 41.
Despite those efforts, the Royals struggled to match the demanding scoring rate during the closing stages. They completed their 20 overs on 187 for 6, finishing 18 runs behind Dambulla’s total.
Naib completed an excellent individual performance by taking two wickets, while Mohammed Wasim also claimed two dismissals. Their efforts ensured Dambulla Sixers began the new LPL season with a deserved victory.
