Everton returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a determined 1-0 triumph over Newcastle United at St James’ Park, thanks to another decisive contribution from Thierno Barry.
The French forward continued his impressive scoring form, finding the net against Newcastle for the second time within five days. His latest effort secured Everton’s first league success since September and provided a much needed boost to their campaign.
Following a goalless opening period, the breakthrough arrived four minutes after the interval. Tyrique George advanced into Newcastle’s penalty area without facing significant defensive pressure and directed a low attempt towards goal. Goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to gather the ball cleanly, allowing Barry to convert from close range.
The strike marked Barry’s eighth goal in 12 appearances across all competitions this season, further highlighting his growing importance to Everton’s attacking ambitions.
Newcastle struggled to establish control throughout the encounter, while the visitors created opportunities to extend their advantage. Jarrad Branthwaite threatened with a powerful header, forcing Hornicek into an important second half save.
The hosts nearly equalised after 66 minutes when Anthony Elanga connected with Harvey Barnes’ delivery. Jordan Pickford produced a vital intervention, with the ball striking the woodwork before rolling dangerously along the goal line.
Pickford remained influential during the closing stages, denying substitute Yoane Wissa with his feet in the 90th minute.
Everton also appealed for a penalty following contact between Fabian Schar and Barry, although the referee’s original decision remained unchanged after a VAR review.
Newcastle’s disappointing evening ended with Jacob Ramsey receiving a second yellow card in the 98th minute, just 84 seconds after his initial booking.
The result rewarded Everton’s disciplined performance and attacking persistence, while Newcastle were left reflecting on missed opportunities and another frustrating defeat against familiar opposition.
