Williams have confirmed that Alex Albon will stay with the Formula 1 team for the 2027 season, keeping one of the key figures in their rebuilding programme at Grove.
The Thai racer returned to the grid with Williams in 2022 after spending the previous year as Red Bull’s reserve. Since then, he has played a major role in the team’s attempts to climb back towards the front of Formula 1. That progress included a fifth place finish in the 2025 Teams’ Championship.
The 2026 campaign has proved far more difficult. Even so, Albon has chosen to remain part of the project and believes one disappointing season should not overshadow the wider progress made by the organisation. He said the changes at Williams since his arrival have been enormous and stressed that he remains determined to help the squad move up the order.
Team Principal James Vowles welcomed the agreement, describing Albon as an important leader within the team’s transformation. Vowles believes the 30 year old remains among the strongest drivers on the grid and said the commitment reflects mutual confidence in Williams’ long term direction.
Albon has also reached two landmarks this season. At the Barcelona Catalunya Grand Prix, he made his 96th start for Williams, moving beyond Nigel Mansell to become the driver with the most appearances for the team. Four races later in Hungary, he celebrated his 100th Grand Prix for the historic constructor.
Despite those personal achievements, results have been difficult in 2026. Albon is currently 16th in the Drivers’ Championship with five points, while Williams sit ninth in the Teams’ standings.
The squad is targeting an improvement after the summer break, with an upgrade package expected for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Williams will hope the changes can deliver improvement during the closing stages of the season.
