Australia Women delivered an impressive performance against Bangladesh in Brisbane, securing a comfortable seven wicket victory in the opening encounter of their three match ODI series. Outstanding contributions from Annabel Sutherland and Phoebe Litchfield helped the hosts establish an early advantage.
Bangladesh struggled to build momentum after being dismissed for 166 runs. Sutherland spearheaded Australia’s bowling attack with excellent figures of 4 for 30, using clever variations in pace and delivery to trouble the opposition.
Megan Schutt provided an exceptional start, removing Fargana Hoque with the opening delivery before dismissing Sarmin Sultana shortly afterwards. Her second breakthrough marked a significant career achievement as she became only the third Australian woman to reach 150 ODI wickets.
Bangladesh faced considerable pressure after losing three early wickets. Their difficulties increased when the scoreboard reached 48 for 4, forcing captain Nigar Sultana to adopt a defensive approach.
Nigar contributed 29 runs from 83 deliveries before Tahlia McGrath ended her resistance. Although Bangladesh struggled to accelerate during the middle overs, Ritu Moni displayed attacking determination alongside Shorna Akter, helping the visitors reach a more respectable total.
Australia approached their chase with confidence, led by Litchfield’s aggressive 77. Her commanding batting display ensured the target was achieved with seven wickets remaining and 24.2 overs unused.
The result also strengthened Australia’s remarkable record at Allan Border Field, where they have now completed 22 consecutive ODI matches without defeat.
For Bangladesh, the contest highlighted the importance of stronger partnerships, improved scoring opportunities and greater confidence against Australia’s experienced bowling attack.
Meanwhile, Australia will look to maintain their impressive momentum throughout the remaining fixtures as they pursue another convincing series triumph on home soil.
