Belarus secured an important 1–0 victory over Finland in their UEFA Nations League Group C1 encounter, with Artem Shumanskiy delivering the decisive moment almost immediately after kick off.
The match had barely begun when Shumanskiy found the net in the first minute, giving Belarus an ideal start and forcing Finland to chase the contest from the outset. The early breakthrough ultimately proved enough to separate the two nations.
Finland attempted to respond and searched for opportunities to restore parity, but Belarus remained disciplined in defence. The hosts protected their narrow advantage through the first half and went into the interval still leading by a single goal.
Changes followed after the break as Finland looked for a route back into the game. Joel Pohjanpalo and Oiva Jukkola were introduced in the 58th minute, while Benjamin Källman and Santeri Väänänen entered shortly afterwards. Despite those attacking adjustments, the Finnish side could not produce the equaliser they needed.
Belarus also made several substitutions as they concentrated on managing the closing stages and preserving their advantage. Their defensive organisation held firm until the final whistle, completing a valuable victory.
The result continued Belarus’ improvement following their 4–0 triumph over San Marino three days earlier. It also marked their first win against Finland after the teams had drawn 0–0 in Helsinki on 29 September.
For Finland, the defeat interrupted a promising Nations League run that had included a 7–0 victory against San Marino and a 2–1 success over Albania.
Both countries now turn their attention to the final two Group C1 fixtures in November, with crucial points still available as the Nations League campaign approaches its conclusion.
