Brighton Overcome Red Card Drama to Secure Impressive Win Against Sunderland

Brighton demonstrated remarkable determination to secure a 2–0 Premier League victory over Sunderland, overcoming a controversial sending off to continue their impressive run of results.

Maxim de Cuyper and Jaouen Hadjam delivered the decisive goals, helping Fabian Hurzeler’s squad retain third place in the standings, just two points behind Manchester City and Arsenal.

Following a closely contested opening period, Brighton finally broke through in the 53rd minute. Experienced midfielder Pascal Gross produced a perfectly timed pass towards de Cuyper, who calmly directed his effort beyond Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

However, the contest took an unexpected turn four minutes later when defender Pascal Struijk challenged Wilson Isidor during a promising attacking move.

Although referee Thomas Bramall initially allowed play to continue, a VAR review prompted him to reconsider. After examining the incident, Bramall dismissed Struijk, leaving Brighton with ten players for the remaining half hour.

Despite Sunderland’s numerical advantage, the visitors remained organised defensively and successfully resisted attempts to restore parity.

Brighton eventually sealed the result during added time when Hadjam completed a swift attacking move with a precise finish, registering his maiden goal for the club.

The result marked Brighton’s third consecutive league victory, an achievement they had not accomplished for eight years. Their recent performances have also produced ten unanswered goals.

Gross continued his outstanding individual campaign, recording seven goal contributions across six appearances. At 35, he also became the oldest footballer since Ryan Giggs in February 2012 to register assists in three successive Premier League fixtures.

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s difficulties deepened following their third straight defeat. Sitting 16th, they face growing pressure near the relegation places.

With seven matches scheduled across 21 days, Brighton will hope to preserve their momentum and maintain their challenge among England’s leading clubs.
