Chelsea Stage Sensational Recovery to Down Leeds in Carabao Cup Classic

A rotated Chelsea side produced one of the season’s most dramatic turnarounds, overturning a two goal deficit to defeat Leeds United 6-2 in a pulsating Carabao Cup third round clash at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds, fielding a heavily changed lineup under Daniel Farke, controlled the opening period and deservedly took the lead when defender Tarik Muharemovic nodded home from a corner. Manager Xabi Alonso’s own experimental XI struggled to respond, and things worsened shortly after the interval when Brenden Aaronson finished smartly to double the visitors’ advantage.

That seemed to be the cue for Alonso’s intervention. Introducing Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James at the break completely shifted the momentum. Palmer converted a penalty after Dan James fouled Pep Chavarria inside the box, then produced a superb curling effort moments later to level the score within two minutes.

Neto then fired Chelsea ahead on the counter, latching onto a pass involving Palmer and Rogers, before Danny Welbeck turned smartly to make it four. Leeds briefly rallied through substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who tapped in Noah Okafor’s cross, but the hosts refused to relent.

Valentin Barco thumped in a fifth after another Rogers assist, and Welbeck completed the scoring in stoppage time when Barco’s deflected shot found the net for a sixth.

With both clubs making wholesale changes following their weekend league matches, the contest showcased the strength of Chelsea’s squad depth. Alonso’s decisive substitutions ultimately proved the difference, propelling the Blues into the fourth round, where fixtures are scheduled for late October.
