Dedic Reunites With Matthias Jaissle After Newcastle Move

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Amar Dedic from Benfica in a transfer worth around £30 million.

Dedic has agreed a five year contract with the Premier League club after successfully completing his medical on Tyneside on Monday. Newcastle officially confirmed the transfer on Tuesday, which also marked the defender’s 24th birthday.

The move sees Dedic link up once again with Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle. The pair previously worked together at Red Bull Salzburg, where they celebrated an Austrian league title in 2023.

Dedic described his arrival at St James’ Park as a major moment in his career and said the opportunity to work under Jaissle again played an important role in his decision. He is also looking forward to experiencing Premier League football and playing in front of Newcastle’s home supporters.

The Magpies had been searching for additional cover on the right side of defence following Kieran Trippier’s departure. The experienced England defender left Newcastle after his contract expired and later joined Wolves on a free transfer.

Dedic could be required immediately when Newcastle begin their Premier League campaign against Liverpool at St James’ Park on Sunday. Tino Livramento remains on the sidelines as he continues his recovery from a calf problem suffered while representing England in June.

Jaissle believes his latest recruit possesses the attributes required to fit Newcastle’s preferred approach. Having worked with Dedic earlier in his career and continued to follow his development, the manager is familiar with what the defender can offer.

Dedic brings pace, physical strength and technical ability, while also providing options in both defensive and attacking situations. Newcastle will hope the Bosnia international can quickly adapt to English football and establish himself as an important part of Jaissle’s squad.
