Wolverhampton Wanderers secured local bragging rights with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Molineux, as Fer Lopez capitalised on a costly defensive mistake to decide the Black Country derby.
The highly anticipated Championship encounter was the first Black Country derby played in front of supporters at Molineux in 14 years, creating a lively atmosphere in front of around 30,000 fans. Wolves produced the stronger performance for much of the contest and eventually found their reward five minutes after half-time.
Wolves dominated the opening period but were repeatedly denied by West Brom goalkeeper Max O’Leary.
Nasser Djiga came close to breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute when his header was brilliantly tipped onto the underside of the crossbar. O’Leary was called into action again when Mateus Mane tested him from an angle before producing another excellent reflex save to keep out Marshall Munetsi’s close range header.
West Brom struggled to create opportunities at the opposite end. Isaac Price’s free kick, comfortably dealt with by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa, was Albion’s only real attempt during a first half largely controlled by the home side.
Despite their pressure, Wolves went into the interval frustrated at 0-0.
That frustration disappeared in the 50th minute.
West Brom attempted to play out from the back after O’Leary rolled the ball into his defence. Nat Phillips then played a loose pass directly into the path of Lopez, who reacted immediately. The Spanish attacker raced onto the mistake before delicately lifting his finish over O’Leary and into the far corner from close range.
It was Lopez’s fifth goal of the Championship season, continuing an impressive start to the campaign for the Wolves forward. He had already established himself as an important attacking figure under head coach Cesar Peixoto, contributing three goals and two assists during August before adding further goals in September.
Wolves almost doubled their advantage eight minutes after the opener when Mane created another opportunity for Adam Armstrong, although the striker’s effort was blocked.
West Brom attempted to increase the pressure as the second half progressed, particularly from set pieces. Sa was forced into a save from one free kick, while Price sent another effort over the goal.
Peixoto gradually adjusted his side after taking the lead, withdrawing both Mane and Lopez as Wolves dropped deeper and focused on protecting their advantage.
Albion pushed more players forward during the closing stages, but Wolves defended strongly and prevented their rivals from finding a clear route back into the match.
There was a nervous moment during stoppage time when Wolves captain Toti Gomes collided with Sa as both attempted to deal with a cross into the penalty area. Toti was able to continue, and Wolves successfully survived the final moments to secure the clean sheet.
The victory also continued Wolves’ positive Championship momentum. They had beaten Sheffield United 1-0 in their previous league outing thanks to a late Raul Jimenez goal, meaning Peixoto’s side have now recorded consecutive 1-0 league victories.
More importantly for the supporters inside Molineux, this was a derby victory against one of their closest rivals.
Wolves’ performance deserved the three points. They created the better chances, forced O’Leary into several important saves and were alert enough to punish West Brom when the decisive mistake arrived.
For Albion, Phillips’ misplaced pass will be the moment they regret most. In a derby where clear chances were limited, one defensive error was enough to separate the teams.
For Wolves and Fer Lopez, however, it was a memorable afternoon. A composed finish, a clean sheet and three valuable Championship points ensured that the Black Country bragging rights belonged to the Old Gold.
