Bruno Fernandes produced a superb three goal performance as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to defeat Ipswich Town 5 2 at Old Trafford and register their first Premier League victory of the season.
Michael Carrick’s side entered the fixture looking for a response after losing their opening league game against Hull City. However, United initially struggled against the newly promoted visitors, who moved ahead after 29 minutes.
Abdul Fatawu delivered into the area and Leif Davis met the ball with an impressive volley to beat Senne Lammens.
United responded five minutes before the break. Marcelino Nunez lost possession and Matheus Cunha quickly found Fernandes, who drove his effort past Kjell Scherpen to level the contest.
The home side stepped up the pressure after half time. Bryan Mbeumo struck the frame of the goal from close range before United completed the turnaround in the 56th minute. Harry Maguire’s attempt took a decisive deflection off Jacob Greaves and ended up in the net following a VAR review.
Greaves was involved again moments later when he brought Cunha down inside the penalty area. Fernandes converted from the spot in the 61st minute to give United breathing space.
The Portuguese midfielder completed his second Premier League hat trick seven minutes later, reacting quickest when Mbeumo’s attempt dropped kindly into his path.
Fernandes then became creator, sending an excellent pass forward for Mbeumo, who lifted the ball beyond Scherpen to make it 5 1 with eight minutes remaining.
Ipswich managed a late consolation when Julio Enciso supplied Chuba Akpom for his first goal for the club.
The result moves Manchester United into 10th place, ahead of 12th placed Ipswich on goal difference.
