Australia delivered an impressive performance in Durban, defeating South Africa by 214 runs in the opening Test of their highly anticipated series. Josh Hazlewood emerged as the leading performer, producing a remarkable bowling display to secure a convincing result for the visitors.
Facing an enormous target of 421, South Africa struggled to maintain their resistance and eventually finished on 206. Hazlewood dominated the closing stages, recording career best figures of 6 for 49 from 16.5 overs as Australia completed their triumph during the second session.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Aiden Markram demonstrated exceptional patience with a determined innings of 75 from 237 deliveries. His partnership of 69 with Wiaan Mulder briefly offered the hosts some encouragement, but Australia regained control through timely breakthroughs.
Mulder occupied the crease for 110 balls before Hazlewood removed him. Kyle Verreynne departed shortly afterwards, caught by Steven Smith off Matt Renshaw, leaving South Africa facing another difficult situation.
Renshaw enjoyed an extraordinary match, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. His outstanding scores of 190 and 82 established Australia’s advantage, while two additional wickets highlighted his unexpected bowling contribution.
South Africa resumed the final day on 102 for 4, hoping to extend the contest. However, Australia’s disciplined attack gradually dismantled their remaining batting order. Mitchell Starc eventually dismissed Markram before Hazlewood completed the victory by removing Anrich Nortje.
The result marked Australia’s successful return to Test cricket in South Africa following the controversial 2018 tour.
It also represented South Africa’s first Test defeat under captain Temba Bavuma, whose previous 12 matches in charge had produced 11 victories and one draw.
With a powerful opening statement, Australia gained valuable momentum, while South Africa must address their batting difficulties before the next encounter.
