Jean Silva Chokes Out Delgado, Calls For Title Shot

Jean Silva Chokes Out Delgado, Calls For Title Shot

Jean Silva’s debut as a UFC headliner began with an unusual sight: five minutes of near total inactivity. The Brazilian threw almost nothing early, holding back until the closing moments of round one, and the crowd at Desert Diamond Arena began questioning whether Jose Miguel Delgado’s prefight confidence carried some truth.

That doubt didn’t last. Silva flipped a switch in round two, ramping up his attack while Delgado tried to circle away and control distance. By round three, Silva had him boxed in against the cage, landing a heavy right hook that sent Delgado to the canvas. From there, Delgado scrambled but exposed his back, allowing Silva to lock in a one arm rear naked choke, finishing the contest at 2:57 of the third stanza.

Delgado deserves credit despite the setback. Stepping in on short notice for the injured Yair Rodriguez, fighting in his home state in front of a supportive crowd, and facing a ranked opponent, he matched Silva for two full rounds before the finish came. It marks his second defeat inside the Octagon, though it shouldn’t derail his momentum.

Silva wasted no time celebrating quietly. He climbed the cage and approached UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell directly, pushing his case for a title opportunity through a Portuguese translator live on air. His message wasn’t about climbing the rankings gradually; he wants the winner of the upcoming title bout.

That fight, Alexander Volkanovski defending against unbeaten contender Movsar Evloev, headlines UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on October 24. With this victory, Silva improves to seven wins in his last eight Octagon appearances, his only setback coming against Diego Lopes.
