Josh Allen Leads Buffalo Bills to Thriller as Eagles Edge Commanders in Dramatic NFL Week 1

The 2026 NFL season delivered a spectacular opening Sunday, with the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles both surviving tense divisional and conference battles to begin their campaigns with victories.

Josh Allen produced one of the standout performances of the opening weekend as the Bills defeated the Houston Texans 36-31 in a back and forth thriller. Allen threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing scores, repeatedly making big plays when Buffalo needed them most.

The game appeared to be slipping away from Buffalo late in the fourth quarter, but Allen orchestrated a crucial 96 yard drive. With just 1:36 remaining, he found Joshua Palmer for a 34 yard touchdown that put the Bills back in front. Houston had one final opportunity to respond, but Greg Rousseau sacked C.J. Stroud and forced a fumble that was recovered by Terrel Bernard, sealing the victory.

Allen’s performance was supported by an impressive receiving display. Dalton Kincaid finished with 130 receiving yards, while new Bills receiver DJ Moore contributed five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. The victory was particularly significant because it ended Buffalo’s long wait for a win in Houston, with the Bills’ previous victory there coming in 2006.

Houston nevertheless showed plenty of promise. Stroud passed for 274 yards and two touchdowns, while David Montgomery scored three touchdowns in his Texans debut. The Texans moved the ball effectively for much of the afternoon, but two lost fumbles ultimately proved costly in a game decided by the smallest margins.

Philadelphia then faced its own late scare against Washington, eventually holding on for a 24-22 victory at Lincoln Financial Field. Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes for the Eagles, while Dallas Goedert caught two of those scores as Philadelphia established a lead before Washington mounted a dramatic fourth quarter comeback.

The Commanders refused to go quietly. Jayden Daniels helped Washington score two fourth quarter touchdowns, including a late one yard pass to Antonio Williams that reduced the deficit to two points with just over a minute remaining. Washington then attempted a two point conversion to tie the game, but Philadelphia’s defense stopped the attempt, allowing the Eagles to preserve the victory.

For Philadelphia, the win provided an important early boost despite some offensive inconsistencies. Hurts finished with 203 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Saquon Barkley added 83 rushing yards, including a 42 yard run that helped give the Eagles an explosive element on the ground.

The opening weekend therefore delivered exactly what NFL fans had hoped for: dramatic finishes, standout quarterback performances and games decided in the final minutes. Buffalo’s comeback victory in Houston showcased Allen’s ability to deliver under pressure, while Philadelphia’s narrow escape demonstrated the importance of defensive execution when the game is on the line.

With both the Bills and Eagles now 1-0, their Week 1 victories provide an early foundation for what promises to be another highly competitive NFL season.
