Gabriel Martinelli delivered a stoppage time winner as Brazil battled back from a goal down to defeat Japan 2-1 and move into the World Cup last 16, where they will face either Norway or Ivory Coast.
Japan looked organised and fearless from the opening whistle, frustrating Brazil with a compact defensive shape and sharp pressing. Their reward came in the first half when Kaishu Sano reacted quickly to a misplaced pass from Danilo. Sano surged forward, beat Casemiro, and fired a composed finish into the bottom corner to put Japan ahead.
Brazil had plenty of possession before the interval but struggled to create clear opportunities against a disciplined Japanese back line. Carlo Ancelotti responded at half time by bringing on Endrick for Lucas Paqueta, who appeared to be carrying a knock, and the change helped Brazil play with greater urgency.
The equaliser arrived 10 minutes after the restart. Gabriel delivered a dangerous ball to the far post, where Casemiro rose strongly and powered a header past Zion Suzuki. Moments later, Vinicius Jr almost produced a brilliant solo goal, driving from inside the Japan half, beating defenders and forcing Suzuki to tip his effort on to the post.
Japan recovered well and continued to resist Brazil’s pressure, even as Ancelotti’s side relied heavily on crosses in the second period. Brazil sent in 28 balls after half time, repeatedly looking to attack the far post and stretch Japan’s defence.
Just when extra time seemed likely, Japan made a costly mistake. Ao Tanaka lost possession near his own penalty area, allowing Bruno Guimaraes to slide a clever pass into Martinelli. The Arsenal forward controlled the ball and finished calmly off the post in the 95th minute.
It was cruel on Japan, who had competed superbly, but Brazil’s persistence and late composure kept their World Cup dream alive.
