Mexico Book Place in World Cup Knockout Stage with Win Over South Korea

Mexico became the first team to secure a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after earning a 1-0 victory against South Korea in Guadalajara.

After a quiet opening period that left home supporters frustrated, the contest finally came to life shortly after the break. The decisive moment arrived in the 50th minute when a mix up in the South Korean defence proved costly. Goalkeeper Kim Seung gyu failed to hold onto the ball following an accidental collision with defender Lee Gi hyuk, allowing Luis Romo to react quickest and finish into an unguarded net.

The hosts controlled large spells of the second half but were unable to add further goals despite creating several promising opportunities. Veteran forward Raul Jimenez nearly doubled the advantage in the 75th minute, but his attempt from a difficult angle was denied by Kim. Later, substitute Obed Vargas tested the goalkeeper with a powerful effort that required another impressive save.

South Korea pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages. Their best opportunity came three minutes from time when Cho Gue sung directed a header toward goal from close range. Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel produced an excellent stop before quickly recovering to deny Yang Hyun jun on the rebound.

Earlier in the match, captain Son Heung min thought he had created a breakthrough after lifting the ball over Rangel, but the chance was ruled out for offside after Edson Alvarez cleared from the goal line.

The victory gives Javier Aguirre’s side six points from two matches and guarantees top spot in Group A. Mexico will now remain in Mexico City for their Round of 32 fixture and a potential Round of 16 clash. Meanwhile, South Korea still hold a strong chance of progressing thanks to their opening match victory over the Czech Republic.
