Esteban Ocon will leave Haas at the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season, bringing his two year spell with the American owned team to a close and leaving the French driver searching for a way to remain on the grid in 2027.
Ocon confirmed his departure ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend in Malaysia, ending weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future with the team.
The 30 year old joined Haas from Alpine at the beginning of the 2025 season and has competed alongside British driver Oliver Bearman throughout his time with the squad. Haas subsequently confirmed that the two parties will separate once the current campaign concludes.
The announcement does not mean Ocon intends to walk away from Formula 1.
In his statement confirming the news, the former Grand Prix winner stressed that he remains motivated to continue competing and described his Haas departure as categorically not the end of his Formula 1 career.
That determination could become important over the coming months, because opportunities on the 2027 grid are becoming increasingly limited.
Ocon proud despite challenging Haas spell
Ocon arrived at Haas as one of the most experienced drivers the team had ever signed.
His move from Alpine was significant because he became the first Grand Prix winner to race full time for Haas, having previously taken a memorable maiden F1 victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu hoped Ocon’s experience would help Haas establish itself as a more consistent midfield operation while rookie Bearman developed alongside him.
Across his time with Haas so far, Ocon has recorded 12 points scoring finishes from 39 Grands Prix, with his strongest result coming when he finished fifth at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix.
However, consistently extracting results from Haas machinery has proved difficult.
Ocon acknowledged that his two seasons had not always unfolded under straightforward circumstances, but said he would leave the project proud of his performances.
He also promised to continue giving maximum effort during the remaining rounds of the season rather than allowing his confirmed departure to affect his approach.
Haas offered a similarly respectful message.
Komatsu thanked Ocon for his professionalism and contribution to the organisation, highlighting the importance of his experience during the major technical regulation changes introduced for 2026.
The team principal said Ocon’s feedback had been valuable while Haas worked to understand and develop the VF-26 during the season.
Bearman performance helped shape Haas decision
Despite Ocon’s experience, his performances relative to Bearman appear to have played a role in Haas deciding to make a change.
Formula 1’s official analysis reported that Haas had expected more from Ocon during the 2025 campaign, particularly after he finished the season behind his rookie team mate.
Bearman then made another strong start to 2026, taking seventh place in Australia and fifth in China.
Ocon struggled to find the same rhythm during the opening phase of the season. By the time his performances improved, Haas had fallen backwards relative to several midfield rivals and points had become harder to secure.
The Frenchman did produce an encouraging result at the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Ocon finished eighth in Baku, scoring his first points since Monaco and demonstrating that he can still deliver competitive performances when the opportunity arises.
However, the decision regarding his future had effectively already been made.
According to Formula 1’s analysis, Komatsu met with Ocon ahead of the Baku weekend and informed him that Haas intended to pursue a different direction for 2027.
Ocon currently sits 16th in the Drivers’ Championship, 13 points behind Bearman, while Haas occupy seventh place among the 11 teams competing this season.
Who could replace Ocon?
Haas have not yet officially announced who will occupy Ocon’s seat next season.
Several young drivers have been evaluated through Testing of Previous Cars sessions, giving the team multiple options.
Among those assessed are McLaren reserve and Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, Haas reserves Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa, and Ferrari junior Rafael Camara.
Camara currently appears particularly prominent in discussions surrounding the seat.
The Brazilian has impressed during his Formula 2 campaign and moved into the championship lead following the Baku round. Ferrari are also understood to be keen on providing their junior driver with an opportunity to graduate to Formula 1.
That relationship could be relevant because Haas have maintained strong technical links with Ferrari since entering Formula 1 in 2016.
Haas use Ferrari power units, while the American team also maintains a separate technical relationship with Toyota.
Formula 1’s analysis reports that Bearman is expected to remain for a third season in 2027, although Haas have not yet formally announced their complete driver line up.
If another young driver joins him, Haas would move away from the experienced driver structure represented by Ocon and instead field one of the youngest partnerships on the grid.
What options remain for Ocon?
Ocon’s immediate challenge is finding another race seat.
Several teams have already locked in their 2027 driver pairings, narrowing the number of realistic openings.
Aston Martin had been considered one possible destination if Fernando Alonso decided to retire, but that opportunity disappeared when the two time world champion extended his deal for 2027.
Racing Bulls and Cadillac remain among the teams whose final line ups have yet to be fully settled, although both have several candidates of their own.
Ocon has nevertheless made clear that he wants to remain in Formula 1 rather than immediately exploring opportunities in other racing categories.
His experience could still make him attractive if another seat becomes unexpectedly available.
Ocon has competed in Formula 1 for more than a decade, representing Manor, Force India, Racing Point, Renault, Alpine and Haas during his career.
He is also a proven Grand Prix winner.
But with teams increasingly investing in younger drivers, securing a full time seat for 2027 could prove difficult.
A reserve role could offer another route
If Ocon cannot secure a race seat, a reserve role may become his most realistic way of remaining closely involved in Formula 1.
That would not be unfamiliar territory.
Ocon spent the 2019 season as Mercedes’ reserve and third driver after losing his Force India race seat.
He used that season away from competition to remain connected with Formula 1 before returning to the grid with Renault in 2020.
A similar arrangement could potentially give him time to wait for opportunities to emerge during the 2027 driver market.
Formula 1’s analysis notes that Ocon remains connected to the Mercedes driver programme, making a supporting role with the Silver Arrows one possibility if a full time seat cannot be secured.
Recent F1 history has also shown that a year away from racing does not necessarily end a driver’s career.
Drivers including Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez have demonstrated that experienced competitors can return to the grid after spending time on the sidelines.
For Ocon, the objective will therefore be to remain visible and competitive throughout the final races of 2026.
Final races provide an opportunity
Although his Haas departure is settled, Ocon still has time to strengthen his case to potential employers.
His eighth-place finish in Azerbaijan arrived at an ideal moment and gave him another points scoring result during a season in which opportunities have often been limited.
Ocon has repeatedly highlighted his record of success across multiple racing categories as evidence that he remains capable of competing at Formula 1 level.
The Frenchman won championships in junior single seater competition before reaching F1 and eventually becoming a Grand Prix winner.
At 30, he also believes he has plenty of competitive years remaining.
The final portion of the 2026 season will therefore carry significance beyond Haas’ Constructors’ Championship position.
Each strong qualifying session or points finish could help remind teams of what Ocon can still provide.
For Haas, the decision represents the next stage of an evolving driver strategy.
For Ocon, it creates uncertainty but not resignation.
Esteban Ocon’s two year Haas chapter will finish at the end of 2026, but the Frenchman has made one thing clear, he is not treating his departure as a farewell to Formula 1, and the fight to secure his next opportunity has already begun.
