Sri Lanka Women Make History with ODI Series Victory Over Pakistan

Sri Lanka Women delivered a dominant display in Hambantota to defeat Pakistan Women by eight wickets and secure a memorable 2 to 1 victory in the three match ODI series at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium on 28 July.

After winning the toss, the hosts chose to field and were rewarded almost immediately. Chethana Vimukthi produced a remarkable second over, removing three Pakistan batters without giving away a single run. Her devastating burst left the visitors under severe pressure before they had any chance to settle.

Pakistan attempted to rebuild, but Sri Lanka kept control through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. Captain Chamari Athapaththu and Kavisha Dilhari supported Vimukthi superbly, taking three wickets each. Their efforts ensured that Pakistan were dismissed for 187 in 40 overs, leaving Sri Lanka with a manageable target in the series decider.

The run chase was handled with confidence and composure. Athapaththu led from the front with an attacking half century that immediately placed Pakistan on the defensive. Harshitha Samarawickrama then continued her excellent form, adding another well judged fifty after scoring a century in the second ODI.

Hasini Perera also played an important role, remaining unbeaten after reaching her half century and guiding the home side towards victory. Sri Lanka crossed the finishing line in the 38th over with only two wickets lost, completing an impressive chase without allowing the contest to become tense.

The result gave Sri Lanka Women a 2 to 1 series success and their first bilateral ODI series triumph over Pakistan Women in 24 years. It was a landmark achievement for the team, built on early wickets, controlled bowling and assured batting under pressure. The performance also highlighted Sri Lanka’s growing strength in the women’s game and provided a special moment for the players and supporters alike in Hambantota.
