Jonathan Haggerty Retains Title with Dominant Victory Over Yuki Yoza at ONE SAMURAI 1

At ONE SAMURAI 1, held on April 29 at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena, Jonathan “The General” Haggerty successfully defended his ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title with a unanimous decision win over Yuki Yoza. Haggerty showcased his striking prowess and fight IQ throughout the five-round battle, cementing his dominance in the division.

From the outset, both fighters came out swinging. Yoza, who was on a perfect 3-0 streak in ONE Championship, wasted no time showcasing his sharp front kicks and offensive style. Haggerty, however, quickly demonstrated why he’s the champion, evading Yoza’s attacks with his elusive movement, mixing sharp combinations, and landing a flying knee in the opening exchanges.

The second round continued in similar fashion. Haggerty maintained his fluid movement, skillfully mixing low kicks and punches while switching stances to keep Yoza on his toes. Despite Haggerty’s dominance, Yoza wasn’t easily rattled. The Japanese fighter had his moments, landing calf kicks and body shots while also attempting spinning attacks. His counters slowed down Haggerty’s relentless pressure, but the Englishman still maintained a slight edge.

In the third round, Haggerty’s superiority became more apparent as he took control. He unloaded punches in combinations, outpacing the challenger while staying just out of reach of Yoza’s counters. Yoza’s resilience continued to show, but Haggerty’s consistent pressure and diverse attack put him ahead.

As the championship rounds wore on, Haggerty’s experience and strategic brilliance made the difference. He expertly managed the distance, scoring with punches, knees, and kicks while avoiding Yoza’s best strikes. Yoza pressed forward, determined to find a breakthrough, but Haggerty was just too slick and composed.

In the final round, both men emptied the tank. Yoza landed some heavy strikes and even attempted a rolling thunder, but Haggerty’s counters were sharper, and his ability to stay unpredictable proved to be the key.

After five rounds of exceptional striking, Haggerty was awarded the unanimous decision victory. This win, his 24th career victory, solidified his reign as the ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion, and it was clear that the era of his dominance in the division is far from over.
