Lomachenko Eyes Charly Suarez in Ambitious Return to the Ring

One of boxing’s most accomplished fighters could soon be heading back into action. Reports indicate that former three division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko is interested in facing undefeated Filipino contender Charly Suarez as he prepares for a return following more than two years away from competition.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Lomachenko views Suarez as the ideal opponent for his first bout back in the ring. The Ukrainian star, who owns a professional record of 18 wins and 3 defeats with 12 knockouts, is said to be targeting the matchup after Suarez completes his scheduled appearance on July 11 at the San Francisco Civic Center.

Despite the lengthy layoff, Lomachenko appears eager to test himself against a dangerous and unbeaten challenger. Suarez carries an impressive 18 and 0 record with 10 victories coming inside the distance and has steadily built momentum in the super featherweight division.

The Filipino boxer remains one of the division’s most talked about names following his controversial encounter with Emanuel Navarrete in May 2025. Their contest ended in confusion after a cut above Navarrete’s eye forced an early stoppage. Initially, officials ruled the injury resulted from an accidental clash of heads, sending the fight to the scorecards where Navarrete earned a narrow decision.

However, later video evidence showed the damage was caused by a Suarez punch. The California State Athletic Commission subsequently overturned the result and declared the bout a no contest. Following the ruling, the WBO ordered a rematch, leaving Suarez as the mandatory challenger.

A victory over Suarez would place Lomachenko in a strong position to pursue a major showdown with Navarrete, who currently holds the WBO and IBF super featherweight titles. Navarrete, boasting a record of 40 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw with 33 knockouts, has publicly expressed respect for Lomachenko’s achievements and legacy in the sport.

Lomachenko’s career has been defined by elite accomplishments. The two time Olympic gold medalist captured world championships across three weight divisions and earned victories over numerous top level opponents. His only defeats came against world champions Orlando Salido, Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney.

While speculation has also linked Lomachenko with Gervonta Davis, reports suggest no serious discussions have taken place. For now, all attention appears focused on Suarez, a bout that could mark the beginning of another fascinating chapter in the legendary Ukrainian’s career.
