Tony Bellew Backs Anthony Joshua to Beat Tyson Fury in Potential Showdown

Tony Bellew, the former cruiserweight world champion, has thrown his support behind Anthony Joshua in a potential showdown with Tyson Fury. Despite both fighters facing challenges in their recent careers, Bellew believes Joshua’s power could prove decisive in a clash between the two British heavyweights.

The long-anticipated fight between Joshua and Fury, two of the biggest names in boxing, seems closer than ever. Fury recently expressed his willingness to face Joshua after his next comeback fight, and Bellew is confident that the bout will eventually take place.

“It has to happen,” says Bellew.. “It would be a travesty if it didn’t. We’ve waited too long for it. Whenever it happens, we’ll still be eager to see it. Joshua is the most marketable fighter this country has ever produced. He’s a former Olympic gold medalist and a former unified heavyweight champion.”

Bellew, who knows a thing or two about big fights, is also a fan of Fury’s. “Tyson Fury is doing what he does best, and he looks ready. Everything seems to be lining up for this big fight,” he added. “But as much as I respect Fury, it’s clear that both of these fighters are past their prime. They’ve both had ups and downs, but the fight still holds value.”

He also compared the situation to legendary fights from the past. “Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather fought later in their careers, and that was still a huge event. Even Sugar Ray Leonard wasn’t at his peak when he faced Marvin Hagler, but it was still a great fight.”

Joshua’s career has been a rollercoaster ride. After suffering a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in 2024, he bounced back last year with a win over influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Meanwhile, Fury has also faced setbacks, most recently in two losses to Oleksandr Usyk. However, Bellew believes Joshua’s destructive power gives him the edge.

“Joshua is the one with the real knockout power of the two,” said Bellew. “It’s a 50-50 fight, but you have to go with Joshua based on recent performances. Fury has been brilliant, but his losses to Usyk showed some vulnerabilities.”

Bellew also acknowledged Joshua’s struggles outside the ring, including a car crash that killed two of his friends in December. Despite the emotional toll, Joshua has been training hard, now working under the guidance of Usyk. “Joshua’s had a tough time, but he looks in great shape now. His hard work could pay off in a big way.”

Ultimately, Bellew is optimistic about Joshua’s chances. “It’s going to be a great fight, and Joshua could be the one to land the first punch. If he does, Fury will be in trouble.”
