Chris Billam Smith’s upcoming appearance in Bournemouth is expected to proceed as planned this weekend, even as a legal disagreement between two major promotional companies continues to unfold behind the scenes.
The former WBO cruiserweight title holder is scheduled to take on Canada’s Ryan Rozicki in the main attraction at the Bournemouth International Centre. The card will also feature British fighters Jack Massey and Sam Hickey, adding further interest to what is set to be a significant night for boxing fans.
However, attention has shifted away from the ring in recent days after promoter Boxxer initiated legal proceedings relating to several athletes listed for the event. The company argues that certain competitors remain tied to existing agreements and therefore should not be participating without its approval.
According to reports, Boxxer has requested urgent intervention from the courts against both Zuffa Boxing and broadcaster Sky Sports. The promoter insists that all parties involved have been informed of what it describes as ongoing contractual commitments involving the fighters concerned.
In a statement, Boxxer said it had taken legal action because competitors who remain under binding arrangements are continuing to be advertised for Saturday’s card. The organisation added that, after observing developments over recent months, it felt it had no alternative but to seek further legal remedies through the English court system.
Despite the challenge, indications suggest that Zuffa Boxing remains confident in its position and intends to move forward with the event as scheduled. Sources indicate that the company disputes the allegations and does not accept the claims being made against it.
The situation represents one of the first major tests for Zuffa Boxing since its entry into the sport. The promotion was launched by UFC president Dana White and has received substantial backing from Saudi Arabia. Its ambition is to establish itself as a serious force within professional boxing and compete with long standing promoters already operating in the industry.
Billam Smith became one of the promotion’s notable acquisitions earlier this year after agreeing to a multi fight partnership with Zuffa Boxing. Prior to that move, he had been associated with Boxxer under the leadership of Ben Shalom.
For now, the focus remains on Saturday night, where fans are expecting the action inside the ring to take centre stage, even as legal arguments continue outside it.
