Elanga and Wissa Fire Newcastle Past Tottenham for First Jaissle Win

Newcastle United secured their first Premier League success under Matthias Jaissle after second half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa earned a 2 0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Elanga, who opened his league account for Newcastle during the 2 2 draw against Liverpool last week, struck again in the 62nd minute. Nico Gonzalez picked out Amar Dedic with a clever pass, and the defender headed the ball into Elanga’s path. The Swedish winger turned sharply before guiding a composed effort off the far post and into the net.

Newcastle doubled their advantage 10 minutes later after Tottenham failed to deal with a corner. Nick Woltemade provided the knock down and Wissa, left completely free inside the area, produced an acrobatic finish beyond Antonin Kinsky.

Tottenham had enjoyed several promising moments before the interval despite Roberto De Zerbi making five changes following their 3 0 opening defeat to Brentford.

Mathys Tel forced Lukas Hornicek into an early save, while Lewis Hall made an important block to deny Pedro Porro. Debutant Omar Marmoush also went close with a volley that travelled narrowly wide.

Hornicek played a major part in keeping Newcastle level during Spurs’ stronger spell. The goalkeeper denied Andy Robertson from close range before reacting well to keep out Jan Paul van Hecke’s header.

Newcastle looked more dangerous after the restart, with Hall curling an effort just wide before Elanga finally broke the deadlock.

Once Wissa added the second, Jaissle’s side comfortably controlled the closing stages and protected their clean sheet without serious concern.

The victory sends Newcastle up to third place in the Premier League standings, while Tottenham remain rooted to the bottom after two consecutive defeats, with no points and no goals scored.
