Haaland fires Norway into knockout stage with decisive brace against Senegal

Erling Haaland once again underlined his global reputation with a decisive performance as Norway overcame Senegal in New Jersey to secure progression to the last 32 of the World Cup.

The Manchester City forward, Erling Haaland, produced a clinical double that took his tournament tally to four goals from just two matches, a figure that already surpasses any previous Norwegian contribution in World Cup history.

Norway struck first just before the interval when substitute full back Marcus Pederson reacted quickest to a defensive mistake from Senegal skipper Kalidou Koulibaly. His finish from the loose ball gave the Europeans the advantage after a tight opening period.

After the restart, Norway’s attacking quality began to show. A perfectly timed pass from Martin Ødegaard released Haaland, who finished calmly to extend the lead and move into record territory for his nation at this level.

Senegal responded through Ismaïla Sarr, who briefly reignited hopes with a well taken strike. However, Haaland quickly restored control for Norway, finishing another composed opportunity as the ball went in off the crossbar.

Although Sarr struck again deep into stoppage time to create a tense finish, Norway maintained their structure and composure to secure a second straight win in the group.

The result confirms Norway’s place in the knockout phase alongside France, while Senegal’s qualification hopes now depend on a must win final group match against Iraq.

Haaland’s current form remains extraordinary, with goals in twelve consecutive competitive matches for his country and at least two goals in each of his last six appearances, reinforcing his status as one of the most lethal forwards in the tournament.
