Canada’s memorable 2026 World Cup journey came to an end in Houston as Morocco delivered a clinical 3 to 0 victory, making the Canadians the first joint hosts to leave the tournament.
Canada began with real purpose and intensity, pressing high and forcing Morocco into uncomfortable moments during the opening stages. Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi both had golden chances inside the first 11 minutes, but Morocco goalkeeper Bono stood firm to deny them in one on one situations.
Despite Canada’s bright start, Morocco slowly absorbed the pressure and grew into the match. The first half was tense and physical, with English referee Michael Oliver showing eight yellow cards as frustration increased on both sides.
The breakthrough arrived five minutes after the restart. Achraf Hakimi picked out Azzedine Ounahi from a smart set piece, and the Girona midfielder calmly swept the ball home from the edge of the area after Canada failed to react quickly enough.
That goal changed the tone of the contest. Canada continued to push forward but could not turn their possession and energy into meaningful chances. Although Jesse Marsch’s side managed 30 touches inside Morocco’s box, they produced only three efforts on target, with just one coming after the 11th minute.
Ounahi then struck again in the 82nd minute, finishing a quick counter attack to put Morocco in complete control. Soufiane Rahimi, who had earlier headed against the crossbar, added the final goal in stoppage time by sliding his effort under Maxime Crepeau.
Canada’s exit closes the best men’s World Cup campaign in their history. They earned their first point, first win, first group stage qualification and first knockout victory at this tournament. However, the absence of a fully fit Alphonso Davies proved costly, with the Bayern Munich winger remaining on the bench due to hamstring discomfort, despite an MRI scan showing no injury.
For Morocco, the dream continues. After stunning the football world with a semi final run in 2022, they are now just one win away from matching that achievement. Their defence once again stood strong, and their unbeaten record against Canada now stretches to five matches.
