Slovenia Fight Back to Secure 2–1 Victory Over Scotland in Nations League

Scotland suffered a disappointing evening at Hampden Park as Slovenia overturned an early deficit to claim a 2–1 victory in the UEFA Nations League on 6 October 2026. Despite taking the advantage before halftime, the hosts struggled to contain their opponents during a decisive second half.

Ryan Christie provided Scotland with a promising start in the 31st minute. Following an attacking move that saw Jack Hendry’s header strike the post, Christie reacted quickly to guide the rebound into the net. The breakthrough lifted Scottish hopes of securing an important home victory.

However, Slovenia returned after the interval with greater attacking determination. Aljosa Matko restored parity in the 57th minute, capitalising on an opportunity to bring the visitors back into contention.

The momentum continued to favour Slovenia, and Danijel Sturm completed the turnaround in the 71st minute. His decisive finish handed the visitors an advantage that Scotland could not overcome despite their attempts to respond.

Statistically, Scotland enjoyed 54.2% possession and registered 12 attempts, including six on target. Slovenia managed 10 shots, with three testing the goalkeeper. Nevertheless, the visitors demonstrated greater efficiency when opportunities mattered most.

The defeat increased the pressure on Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli, whose team remained third in Group B1 with four points from four matches. Slovenia strengthened their position in second place with seven points, while Switzerland led the standings with 12.

For Scotland, the result highlighted concerns about defensive organisation and maintaining consistency throughout matches. Their promising opening period ultimately counted for little as Slovenia seized control after the break.

With two group fixtures remaining in November, Scotland must produce stronger performances to improve their position. Slovenia, meanwhile, will approach their upcoming challenges with renewed confidence following an important away triumph.
